Even from space enthusiasts, the ‘small stuff’ in our solar system typically gets less attention compared to its major bodies. Yet it is well known that meteorite impacts pose a real, albeit small, risk to our modern society. Extensive evidence has been collected by now that show that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by such a cataclysmic event. But in contrast with the dinosaurs, we humans fortunately have astronomers and space agencies that can assess and mitigate these risks.
Marking the United Nations International Asteroid Day, June 30th, the NVR is happy to present to you a program of three exciting talks on this topic:
Starting off, Detlef Koschny, acting head of ESA’s Planetary Defence Office, will summarize the activities that ESA is undertaking to deal with the threat of a potential asteroid impact; from observations, trajectory modelling to determining the properties of a potential impactor and dissemination of advance warning data.
Next, Danielle Pieterse, astronomer at Radboud University in Nijmegen, will present the results of a recent survey of asteroids and Near-Earth Objects, conducted with the MeerLICHT telescope in SouthAfrica. MeerLICHT has been developed by the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA) and is a prototype for an array of three telescopes in Chile.
Finally, Felix Bettonvil, project manager for NOVA, will present what he does in his free time: Develop and operate cameras to catch fireball events, bright meteors with a high potential of material reaching earth as meteorites. Felix will also discuss the effort to retrieve meteorites and what these can tell us about their origin.
During the event we will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Space Society Twente
