Honorary Members
Since being launched on December 17, 1951, the NVR has seen fit to grant several individuals with an honorary membership, in recognition of exemplary contributions to the NVR or the Dutch space sector in general.
The current honorary members of the NVR are:
![]() | Bart Reijnen: An NVR honorary member since 2015. Bart was given the membership in response to his exceptional service to the Dutch space sector. He also supported the setting up of the first Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SpaceNed and the NVR. |
![]() | André Kuipers: An NVR honorary member since 2004 (see video footage), André was given the membership in response to his meaningful accomplishments as the first Dutch cosmonaut (ESA astronaut from Russia) and long-time enthusiastic ambassador for the NVR. |
![]() | Jan de Koomen: An NVR honorary member since 1991 because of his decades of service as chairman and promoter of the NVR within the Dutch space sector. Jan is now also actively involved with the Nationaal Ruimtevaart Museum in Lelystad.

![]() | Karel Wakker: An NVR honorary member since 1998 due to his years of service as Board member and chairman, and his widespread international endeavours for the Dutch space sector, spanning a period of over 4 decades. Karel has been the director of SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, and was a professor at L&R of TU Delft for many years, where he teached and inspired the younger generations. |
![]() | Piet Smolders: An NVR honorary member since 2001, because of his efforts in promoting the NVR in the press and publications, and his great services in bringing the space sector (in particular the early years of Russian and American manned spaceflight) to the public. |
![]() | Daan de Hoop: An NVR honorary member since 2005, Daan has been involved with the NVR Board for over thirty years, and chairman during the last twelve of these years. He stepped down as chair in 2005. The following year saw a farewell symposium in Noordwijk's Space Expo in honour of his services. |
![]() | Kees de Jager: An NVR honorary member since 2011 - the year of his 90th birthday - Kees was presented with an honorary membership during the NVR 60th anniversary celebration on December 17, 2011. He is an icon of the Dutch space sector due to a long career that saw many international achievements, an overview of which can be found in the 2012/1 edition of Ruimtevaart. |
